MORTON - Doris Brecher, 98, of Morton, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton.
Doris Mae Zobrist was born September 14, 1923, on a farm near Deer Creek, Ill. to Noah and Mary (Birky) Zobrist. Shortly after her birth, the Zobrists moved into Morton to a home adjacent to the Jefferson schoolyard. As the oldest girl of the ten Zobrist children, she was soon called upon to assist in the care of her siblings. This ability to care for others continued throughout her life. She married Robert “Bob” Brecher on July 28, 1946. He preceded her in death on November 12, 2011. Doris was also preceded in death by one daughter, Janene; six brothers, Raymond, Alpha, Calvin, Willis, Lloyd and Noah, Jr.; and one sister, Marilyn Donahue.
Surviving are one son, Jim (Phebe) Brecher of Santa Fe, N.M.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Zimmerman and Ruth Reinken, both of Morton; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Zobrist and Margaret Zobrist, both of Morton and Dorothy Zobrist of Gulf Shores, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Morton High School, Doris enrolled at the Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing in Peoria. She became a Registered Nurse. She later applied those skills at Restmor Nursing Home in Morton. She served as Director of Nurses, Director of Nursing, and later became licensed as the Nursing Home Administrator.
Doris was a member of Community United Church of Christ in Morton where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 11, 2022 at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Further visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Hirstein Cemetery in Morton.
Memorials may be made to Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton or the Community United Church of Christ.
