MORTON - Joseph R. Oyer, 84, of Morton, Ill., passed away on Tues., Nov. 13, 2018, at Villas of Holly Brook in Morton. He passed away in his sleep on his 63rd wedding anniversary. He walked down that final aisle one last time to be with the love of his life forever.
Joe was born May 3, 1934, in Peoria, Ill., to Joseph and Bessie E. (Kent) Oyer. He married Barbara (Barnebee) Oyer on Nov. 13, 1955, at the Morton United Methodist Church where they had first met in Sunday School.
Surviving are his son, Michael (and Mary) Oyer; grandsons, Timothy (and Cynthia) Oyer, and Daniel (and Catherine) Oyer; great-grandchildren, Xavier Oyer and Mary Oyer. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, parents, and sister, Irma Oyer-Lundholm.
Joe was a United States Army veteran having served during the Korean War.
Joe graduated Morton High School in 1952. He worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company for 43 years, retiring as a superintendent in building SS and returning to work part-time in HR as an interviewer for an additional 10 years.
Joe was an active member of the Morton United Methodist Church. He was a Sunday School teacher and served on the Advisory Council. He was also an active member Cursillo from 1980 - 2008; he led two retreats and served on many other retreats giving talks and sharing witness to Jesus Christ. Joe led, participated, and talked at many Prison Ministry retreats, in both state and federal institutions, helping to bring the Word of Christ to those most in need for 28 years. He was a Boy Scout in Troop 85 in his youth and a leader for Troop 178 in Morton for his son.
Joe dearly loved spending time with his wife, son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Fishing was a passion, which he did all throughout the year. One of his favorite things was traveling in their RV around the country with his family.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m., on Thursday, November 15, 2018, prior to a 11 a.m. funeral service, at Morton United Methodist Church, 420 N. Tennessee St., Morton, IL 61550. Rev. Gabe Wanck will officiate. A lunch will be provided after the service in the fellowship hall. A private graveside service for the family only will be at later time at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Morton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Morton United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Special thanks is given to Holly Brook of Morton and its staff. They provided loving Christian care for Joe and Barb for their years there. The staff and facility are truly a gift of love and caring to its residents and their families.
