MORTON – Joseph R. “Joe” Schwarzentraub, 86, of Morton, passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.
He was born on August 14, 1935, in Morton, Ill., the sixth child of Albert and Nellie (Morgan) Schwarzentraub. His siblings include Mildred Schwarzentraub, Milton Schwarzentraub, Dorothy Schmied, and Alvin Schwarzentraub, all preceding him in death. He married Joyce Keaton on March 8, 1958. She survives.
He is also survived by daughters, Kelly (Doug) Meals of Washington, Ill. and Amy (Dennis) Mefford of Wataga, Ill.; sons, Rick (Lisa) Schwarzentraub of Mahomet, Ill. and Josh (Tina) Schwarzentraub of Metamora; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He served in the US Army from 1956 to 1957. Joe owned and operated Schwarzentraub Refigeration for 37 years, retiring in 2000. Joe was able to slow down a bit in retirement, moving to the country near his childhood home in rural Morton, enjoying his time in his wood shop – his “happy place”, and volunteering at the Morton VFW at any opportunity.
He was a lifetime member of the Morton VFW and a member of Twin Oaks Missionary Baptist Church.
A private graveside service will be held at Buckeye Cemetery in rural Morton, with Rev. Tom Meyers officiating.
