PEORIA – Marietta E. Axley, 94, of Morton, formerly of Peoria, passed away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at Villas of Holly Brook in Morton.
She was born on September 6, 1926, in Tamaroa, Ill., to John Hans and Floy Merile (Preston) Shurtz. She married Dr. Milton L. Axley on September 16, 1950, in Davenport, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 18, 2014. She was also preceded in death by one infant brother, John David “Jackie” Shurtz; two brothers, Dale E. Shurtz and Marion Ray (Yvonne) Shurtz; and one son-in-law, Dwight “Abe” Myers.
Surviving are her children, Joyce Myers of Morton and Milton J. (Shelagh Smith) Axley of Rockville, Md.; two grandchildren, David (Abby) Ely of Morton and Elizabeth Axley of Tivoli, N.Y.; two great grandchildren, Zane and Izzy Ely of Morton; two sisters, Jane Bell of Colo. and Floy Ann (Dennis) Borgman of Mo.; sister-in-law, June Shurtz of Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marietta was a member of Woodland Baptist Church in Peoria, where she enjoyed her Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and multiple book clubs and treasured the friendships she formed with the ladies.
Marietta was a loving wife, mother and sister. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly and was not bashful when it came to bragging about them. Marietta was a wonderful aunt to her nieces and nephews who she adored.
A private family funeral service will be held at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria, Ill.
