After graduating from high school and during World War II, she enlisted in the Women's Army Air Corps (WAAC), which was then a component of the United States Army: she served her country from November 18, 1942, until November 20, 1945. While in the service, she earned an American Theater Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, a Victory Ribbon, and a WAAC Service Ribbon. She then lived the rest of her adult life in Texas, where she was last stationed. She married George Boubel, who also preceded her in death. After the Women's Army Air Corps, she worked for many years in payroll at Sears until her retirement.
Her family knew her as Louise or Aunt Louise; but, in Texas, she was always known as Mary, her given name. She liked to cook and greatly enjoyed her home in Corpus Christi. She liked to travel, and was a member of her Bunco Club for many years. Also, in retirement she enjoyed working part time by giving cooking demonstrations or demonstrating products in grocery and retail stores. She was raised a Baptist and remained a Baptist throughout her life.
