MELVIN ROBBINS
MORTON - Melvin A. Robbins, 85, of Morton, passed away Mon., April 16, 2018, at Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka.
Melvin was born June 20, 1932 in Washburn, Ill., to Harry and Mattie (Schneider) Robbins. He married Rose Marie Hoscheidt on Aug. 2, 1958 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Henry, Ill.
Melvin is survived by the love of his life, Rose of Morton; three children, Eric (Cathy) Robbins of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Michelle (Brad) Bernier of Morton, and Allen (Tracy) Robbins, also of Morton; seven grandchildren, David (Lauren) Robbins, Danielle Robbins, Matthew, Michael and Jacob Bernier, and Alec and Brendan Robbins; and one great-grandson Jonathan Robbins.
He was preceded in death by his sister Phyllis Dutton.
Melvin graduated from Washburn High School in 1950. He then worked for a few years as a farmer until enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He later attended and graduated from Peoria Barber College.
Melvin was a Knights of Columbus member and a member of the American Legion for over 60 years in Washburn, Ill.
Melvin worked out of the Peoria Painters Local 157 for over 25 years, specializing in industrial, commercial, and residential painting. He owned and operated a barber shop in Washburn. Melvin worked in the facilities department at Methodist Medical Center, retiring in 1994.
His family was his biggest priority in life. Melvin spent countless hours with his grandchildren and especially enjoyed watching their sporting events. He was an avid lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and was thrilled to watch them win the World Series. He and Rose made a beautiful couple on the dance floor. Melvin loved the outdoors and being active. He was especially fond of fishing, hunting, golfing, bowling and playing cards with his friends. Melvin always enjoyed the comradery of his coffee clubs and spending time harassing and joking with the Miller Paint Store guys. He loved people and never met a stranger. He always loved a good joke; his sense of humor will be greatly missed.
