MORTON – Orease Purvis, nee Hudon, 90, formerly of Morton, passed away on March 24, 2022, in Crofton, Md.
Orease was born in Plymouth, Ind., where she was raised along with her brother, Henry, and sister, Orefeise. She had a tightknit group of girlfriends, lovingly known as the “Eight Devils.” They were her best girlfriends from high school and remained close throughout life.
Orease left Plymouth as a young woman for the BIG CITY of Chicago, where she met the love of her life, Paul G. Purvis, working together at Continental Casualty. On February 11, 1956, during a midwestern blizzard, Orease and Paul were married at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth. They were married for 45 years until his death on November 30, 2001.
Orease and Paul moved from Chicago to Morton in 1963, where they raised their two children, Diane and Paul Richard. Morton will always be home to Orease.
Orease was a trailblazer with a successful career in real estate before many women worked outside the home. She had a true calling as a realtor. This was not a “job” for Orease, but a way of life she absolutely loved. She especially enjoyed helping young families find their first home, solving “unsolvable” problems during a deal, and racing out the door at all hours to support clients who always became her friends.
Orease loved a good martini, the Chicago Cubs, and a stack of blueberry pancakes after Mass every Sunday. Birthdays of friends and family never went forgotten with Orease, who loved mailing cards to all. In the early 1990’s, she and Paul moved to Estero, Fla., where they enjoyed family visits and sunsets at Doc’s Beach House. Orease loved her grandchildren and always made the effort to travel to Maryland and Connecticut to spend time together.
A devout Catholic, she was a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament in Morton and Our Lady of Light in Estero, Fla.
Orease is survived by her daughter, Diane Sells (Jack) Caird (nee Purvis) of Arnold, Md. and her son Paul R. (Debbie) Purvis of Ridgefield, Conn. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Katie (Kevin) Murphy, David (Ryan) Sells, Tom (Elizabeth) Sells, Erin Purvis, Paul J. Purvis and six great-grandchildren, Brendan, Patrick, Reese, Ellen Ruth, Romy, and Thomas Calvert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton, with Msgr. Gerald Ward officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Hirstein Cemetery in Morton.
Memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton.
