VEDA ROWELL
MORTON – Veda Rowell, 106, of Morton, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 6, at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton with her daughter Judy at her side. She would have been 107 on October 27.
Veda Muriel Eash was born on the farm in Gridley, IL to Walter T. and Minnie (Saltzman) Eash.
Veda's family lived in the Gridley/Flanagan/Hopedale area in her childhood years.
After graduation from high school, Veda worked at Salem Children's Home for seven years.
During this time, she had up to 30 boys at a time in her care. She got half of a day off twice a month.
She said that taking care of all those boys was good preparation for becoming a mother herself. She told us that "children need to know what is expected of them " and "to know what their boundaries are". Then "as a parent, you must be consistent!" Veda's children learned many good lessons from their mother (and father).
On March 5, 1944, Veda married Clarence Rowell of Pekin, IL. They were married for 60 years before he passed away in May 2004. She is survived by 4 children, Paul (D'Ann Herrmann) Rowell, David (Janet Brett) Rowell, Joy (Ric) Nutter, Judy Click; and one daughter-in-law, Brenda Rowell (Bob McDonell); 12 grandchildren, Anne (Geoff) Aggen, Jonathan Rowell, Andrew (Amy) Rowell, Bradley (Nicole) Rowell, Daniel (Heather) Rowell, Katie Rowell, Matthew (Kelly) Nutter, Nathan Nutter, Sarah (Jonathan) Lutz, Rachel (Tal) Anderson, Renee Click and Michel (Sheree) Click. and 24 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dale in 1988 and a sister, Shirley Ulrich.
Veda and Clarence were charter members of Grace Evangelical Church in Morton and served faithfully and joyfully there beginning in 1958. Veda especially enjoyed hosting missionaries in her home.
Traveling was special for Veda, and she liked driving to visit her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to read to them and play games with them. Best of all, she
prayed every day for each member of her family by name. She also faithfully prayed for the people and ministries of Grace Church, missionaries at home and abroad, and for our nation.
She often repeated from Hebrews 13:5 in her later years - The Lord will never leave me nor forsake me.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Grace Church in Morton, with Pastor Tim Bertsche and Pastor Doug Habegger officiating. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022, at the church. Further visitation will be held at the church on Saturday, prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.
Burial will follow at Groveland Mennonite Church Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Grace Church or Samaritan’s Purse.
Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton is handling arrangements.
